Hervey Bay

The setting and location combine to make this town a prime holiday destination. Situated between Maryborough and Bundaberg, the town, and bay of the same name, are protected by Fraser Island and lie at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Offering easy access to islands, wildlife and beaches, Hervey Bay is one of Australia's fastest growing regions. There is a wide range of accommodation on offer and the calm waters of the bay are appealing all year round for safe swimming. Walking and cycling tracks run the entire length of the bay.


Main Attractions

Hervey Bay is world renowned for it's whale watching experience. There are 13 organisations operating whale-watching tours offering half day to three quarter and full day options. From late July to early November, Southern Humpback whales spend time in the calm waters of Hervey Bay on their return journey to the Antarctic.

In August Hervey Bay hosts the annual Whale Festival with many attractions, including a Blessing of the Fleet. Hervey Bay is a popular destination for anglers and is the second largest fishing ground along the Queensland coastline. The 700m Urangan Pier is one of the town's landmarks and a favourite spot for fishing and strolling. Vic Hislop's Shark Show is located at Urangan and Neptune's Reefworld, also at Urangan, has aquariums and turtles and a reef shark swim experience. Blue Dolphin Marine Tours also runs dolphin watching and champagne sunset sails outside the whale watching season.

Nearby attractions

There are regular tours to the World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island with its unique perched lakes, turpentine forests and miles of beaches. You can choose from full day guided 4WD bus tours to 3 day experiences and self drive experiences. On the island are scenic 4WD and bushwalking tracks. Lady Elliot Island, the Great Barrier Reef's southernmost island, is only 45 mins from Hervey Bay by air. The waters of the Great Sandy Strait lie between Hervey Bay and Fraser Island and are now a marine park and the seaside resorts of Toogoom and Burrum Heads are only 15 kms to the North.
