DESTINATION: Home Hill

Home Hill

Originally part of the Inkerman Downs cattle station, the land around this Burdekin River Valley town was turned over to sugarcane farms in 1911. Sugarcane is still the main product of this region, which is located 100km south of Townsville.

Main Attractions

Home Hill is linked to its twin town, Ayr, by the district's best-known landmark, the Burdekin Bridge. Referred to as the 'Silver Link', it spans the Burdekin River and was the longest bridge in the country for many years. Ashworth's Treasures of the Earth, located in the main street, incorporates Treasures of the Earth gallery, the rock shop and Ashworth's Jewellers and Potters Workshop. The centre has amazing and beautiful exhibits and is definitely worth visiting. Guided tours of the Inkerman Sugar Mill are run on weekdays during the crushing season, June-Nov.
