Ingham

This sugar town is also the commercial centre of the Herbert River Valley, sometimes dubbed 'Australia's Sugar Bowl'. Ingham is positioned between a wilderness of parks, waterfalls and the waterways of the Hinchinbrook Channel, 110km north of Townsville.


Main Attractions

Victoria Sugar Mill, in Forest Beach Rd, is the country's largest mill with the capacity to crush 4 million tonnes of cane. Guided tours are offered during the crushing season, around July-Dec. A Country Music Festival is held in the town in June and the Australian-Italian Festival in May. For a pleasant stroll or picnic, visit the Botanic Gardens in Palm Tce.

Forest Beach offers a long stretch of beach overlooking the Palm Group of islands, it is located 17km SE of town, and a marine-stinger net is installed at the beach each summer to protect swimmers. The resort islands of Hinchinbrook and Orpheus are located offshore. Lumholtz NP, 51km NW, offers walking tracks, swimming and picnic spots, campgrounds and the 305m-high Wallaman Falls. Camping is also allowed in Broadwater SF. Located 45km west in the Herbert River Valley is a 1.6km rainforest walk. Paluma Range NP, 25km south, features Jourama Falls and the quaint village of Paluma.
