Ipswich

Ipswich is located 44km SW of Brisbane, set in the hills around the Bremer River. It is Queensland's oldest provincial city, which began as a convict settlement in 1827.


Main Attractions

Maps for the areas' heritage trails can be obtained at the information centre. One of the trails is a guide to the Ipswich City Centre where there are numerous heritage buildings, while another leads to the city's many pubs and hotels. Global Arts Link is an interactive art gallery, open daily, 10am-5pm. Both the Bremer and Brisbane rivers provide excellent opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. The Queens Park Nature Centre, located on Goleby Ave, features a range of native wildlife, landscaped gardens and exhibits representing the local bushland and flora communities.

Nearby attractions

Swanbank Power Station, 12km SE, conducts tours by appointment. The Swanbank Vintage Steam Train leaves from the Power Station for a 7km round trip. The train runs on the first Sunday of each month, April-Dec. St Brigid's Church is reputedly the largest wooden church in the South Pacific. It is located at Rosewood, 20km west, and guided tours are available by appointment.
