The hills surrounding this town are reputed to be the home of the legendary Yowie; the Australian version of North America's Bigfoot. Over 3000 sightings of the half-man-half-beast were recorded 1975-1979. A statue, based on the descriptions of those who claim to have seen the beast, stands in Yowie Park on Hope St. The Craft Cottage, located in Yowie Park, is home to a variety of crafts.
