Kingaroy

Kingaroy is located 210km NW of Brisbane. It is the business and rural centre for the prosperous South Burnett district and is known as Australia's 'Peanut Capital', and indeed giant peanut silos dominate the landscape. Apart from peanuts, the town's economy is based on grain, fruit and manufacturing.


Main Attractions

The Heritage Museum is housed in the old power station next to the information centre and displays early machinery used in association with the peanut industry. A Peanut Festival is held in September and a Food and Wine Festival is held each March. Kingaroy Wines is located in the Old Butter Factory at 57 William St, and is one of the largest wineries in the region. There are numerous other wineries offering tastings and cellar door sales.

Nearby attractions

Views of the town and surrounding countryside are provided at the Carroll Nature Area, located off Fisher St. There are panoramic views from Mount Wooroolin, 3km west. Bunya Mountains NP, located 60km SW, and is worthwhile visiting. The park has picnic and camping facilities and numerous walking tracks to rainforests with spectacular flora, waterfalls and streams. The South Burnett region boasts a number of wineries, many open for tastings and sales. Nearby Boondooma and Bjelke-Petersen dams are popular fishing destinations and both host large annual fishing competitions. For 'StarGazing' or Astronomy enthusiasts, a short drive from Kingaroy is Maidenwell, home to the South Burnett — Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory.
