Kuranda

Located at the top of the Macalister Range, beside the Barron River, this appealing rainforest village is best known as a destination of the 34km-long Kuranda Scenic Railway and the 7.5km-long Skyrail Rainforest Cableway from Cairns. This superb skyrail is the longest gondola cableway in the world.


Main Attractions

The cableway and scenic railway offer tourists 2 superb routes between Cairns and Kuranda, another is via the winding and scenic Kuranda Range Road. The tree-lined main street has galleries, craft shops and pubs. Kuranda Markets are famous for their arts, crafts and entertainment. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary has a colourful collection of over 2000 butterflies in a large natural setting. Birdworld, in Rod Veivers Dr, houses a brilliant array of birds, many of them endangered. There are several rainforest walks in the area, including the River Esplanade Walk along the Barron River, the Forest Walk and the Jungle Walk.

Nearby attractions

River cruises and guided rainforest walks depart from the Barron River. Barron Falls are located in Barron Gorge NP, 7km SE, and a platform provides views of the falls. Rainforestation Nature Park is 35km east of town. Tours of the rainforest are available. There is also a Dreamtime Walk and The Koala and Wildlife Park.
