DESTINATION: LongreachSituated on the banks of the Thomson River in the state's central-west, Longreach is the hub of a very prosperous wool and beef area. Considered the 'Gateway to the Outback', Longreach is 700km west of Rockhampton. Main AttractionsThe Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre is the most famous attraction in the town. The centre is dedicated to preserving Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Outback history, to the arrival of the aeroplane and present-day technology. Traditional artefacts are displayed and there is a library, audiovisual presentations and a resource centre. The town was Qantas' first operational base 1922-34 and where the first of 6 DH-50 biplanes were built in 1926. Qantas Founders Outback Museum is at the airport, and Qantas Park, in Eagle St, has a replica of the original Qantas office, now the information centre. The Powerhouse Museum, in Swan St, houses the largest collection of rural power-generating equipment in Australia. Exhibits include a social history hall and the 1923 swimming baths. |
