DESTINATION: Mackay

Mackay

Often referred to as the 'Sugar Capital of Australia', Mackay is located approximately halfway between Cairns and Brisbane. Its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the islands of the Whitsundays and beautiful rainforests make Mackay a most desirable holiday destination.

Main Attractions

A Heritage Walk brochure is available from the information centre, explores the city's architectural heritage and describes 21 buildings of interest. Queens Park, in the city centre, features a magnificent orchid house displaying more than 500 species of orchids, also ferns and other plants. Mackay Marina, one of the state's largest, is also home to one of the world's biggest bulk sugar terminals. Cruises and fishing trips to the islands and Great Barrier Reef depart from the marina. Both Illawong and Harbour beaches offer safe swimming along with picnic areas and playgrounds.
