DESTINATION: MareebaThe largest town on the Atherton Tableland, Mareeba serves as the region's administrative centre and is the beginning of the Outback. It is a town of many cultures, reflected in its cafes and delicatessens; it is also a great place to shop. Mareeba is famous for its annual rodeo in July that draws crowds from all over Australia. Bicentennial Lakes is a recreation area offering walking tracks, picnic areas, parklands and gardens. Brochures are available on the self-guided historic town walk. Mareeba Heritage Museum has displays tracing local history and features a rail ambulance. Coffee Works offer guided tours explaining how coffee is processed, from the bean to the cup. Tastings of several exotic coffees is included in the tour. |

Nearby attractionsBeck's Aviation and Military Museum, 5km south, is the largest privately owned collection of its type in Queensland. Davies Creek NP, 15km east, has a camping area with picnic tables and toilet facilities. A permit is required for overnight stays. Emerald Creek Falls is a 20min drive from town. The return walk along a well-maintained path to the lookout over the falls is 1.9km. There is also a large grassy area beside a shallow creek which is ideal for picnics. The WetLands offer tours of the 120ha park, popular for birdwatching and observing native wildlife. Hot-air balloon flights over the Tablelands are available. latest stories
