The magnificent Mossman Gorge, 8km west, is the district's main attraction. It is part of Daintree NP, which in turn is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, and offers walking tracks, gorges, clear-water creeks and waterfalls. The Kuku Yalanji people conduct guided walks through the rainforest. Scenic roads through Mossman access 3 local beaches; Cooya, Newell and Wonga. To the north of Mossman is the quaint village of Daintree: the gateway to Cape York. Daintree NP, 64km north, has the largest area of tropical rainforest in Australia. For visitors wanting to see crocodiles and other native fauna, it is worthwhile visiting Hartleys Creek Wildlife Reserve, 35km south of Mossman. The resort town of Port Douglas is a short drive away and is a popular stepping-off point for cruises to the Low Isles and the Outer Barrier Reef.

Tropical North Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea islands and the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the rainforest mountains that sweep down from the northernmost section of the Great Dividing Range to the west. Inland from the balmy, humid coast, the Atherton Tableland is elevated 600-900m above sea level. Known as the cool tropics, the weather is usually warm and sunny during the day, while nights are cool to cold. more
