Mount Morgan

Located 38km SW of Rockhampton, the small and historic town of Mount Morgan has a history of gold and copper mining dating back over a century. Mount Morgan Mine is the largest open-cut gold mine in the Southern Hemisphere.


Main Attractions

The Mount Morgan Mine was closed in 1981 but guided tours of the mine's old workings can still be booked. Tours run at 9.30am and 1.30pm, daily. Mount Morgan Historical Museum, located in Morgan St, has a large collection of historical pieces representing the town's early years. The National Trust has classified some historic buildings, including the Court House; and the Railway Station, which contains tearooms and a rail museum. A restored 1904 steam engine operates on weekends and fettler's trolley-rides operate along a 4km-long track on weekdays. The diesel Silver Bullet also operates daily.

The Big Dam is popular for boating and fishing, and is located about 3km north of Mount Morgan. The heritage town of Wowan is located 40km SW and is home to the Scrub Turkey Museum, which is housed in an old butter factory.
