DESTINATION: NambourLocated just off the Bruce Hwy, 104km north of Brisbane in the heart of the Sunshine Coast sugar-growing area, is the agricultural service centre of Nambour. Macadamia nuts and lychees have recently joined the 3 main crops grown in the region; sugar, pineapples and bananas. It is thought the name for the town derives from 'namba' an Aboriginal word for the red flowers of the weeping bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis), which is common in the region. Main AttractionsSugar trains chug across the main street en route to Moreton Sugar Mill during the crushing season, about July-Dec. Nambour Adventure Playground on the corner of Matthew and Anne sts in Quota Memorial Park is a favourite with children. |
