Normanton

Located on the Norman River and 72km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Normanton is the capital of Carpentaria Shire. A major business and service centre, it serves a pastoral region covering 68 250km. Historic Normanton Railway Station is home to the Gulflander train which operates 2 days a week.

Brochures are available for the self-guided scenic walks and drives around the town. The Gulfland Motel, Landsborough St, has a giant barramundi out front. The Shire Office Gardens, in Haig St, displays a life-size replica of Krys the Savannah King, an 8.6m saltwater crocodile caught in the Norman River, which is also famous for its barramundi.

Cruises on the Norman River offer the chance to see jabirus, brolgas, herons and saltwater crocodiles. Shady Lagoon, located 18km east, is popular for bush camping and birdwatching. Camping is also allowed at Walkers Creek, 32km NW, a popular spot for fishing. Dorunda Station, 197km NE of Normanton, offers visitors the chance to stay on a working cattle station. The lakes and rivers on the station are good for barramundi and saratoga fishing. Bang Bang Jump Up rock formation is a solitary hill located 106km SW. A road goes to the top of the hill, which affords panoramic views of the district.
