Oakey

Situated around 30km from Toowoomba, Oakey is rich in historical and scenic attractions. National parks, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast are all within easy reach of the town. Oakey features the country's largest Army Aviation Base. Industries in the town include malting, engineering works and export abattoirs.


Main Attractions

A life-size statue of the racehorse, Bernborough, stands near the town's library. This famous racehorse was bred near Oakey and raced during the 1940s. Oakey Historical Museum is located on the Warrego Hwy. The Flypast Museum of Australian Army Flying is located at the army base and displays a large collection of original and replica aircraft and aviation memorabilia.

Nearby attractions

Jondaryan Woolshed, 22km NW of Oakey, is over 100 years old and is now an Australian heritage theme park. A complex of historic buildings house vintage machinery and memorabilia which commemorates pioneers of the wool industry. There are sheep-shearing demonstrations and visitors can buy goods at the wool store. National parks, including Girraween, Stanthorpe and Cunningham's Gap are ideal for daytrips as they are within easy reach of the town.
