DESTINATION: Proserpine

Lying close to the Whitsunday coast, Proserpine is the business centre for both Airlie Beach and Shutehaven. The town is located 264km SE of Townsville.

The Historical Museum, located on the Bruce Hwy next to the Whitsunday Information Centre, is housed in an old building, once part of a mill. The museum displays memorabilia highlighting the history of the district, including the sugar and mining industries and also has WWII displays.

Nearby attractions

Cedar Creek Falls is a picturesque recreation area where, after rain, a creek drops over the falls into a large swimming hole lined with majestic Alexander palms. Nearby is Peter Faust Dam, 20km west of town. The dam was built to create Lake Proserpine, an area for watersports, including power boating, sailing, swimming, rowing, canoeing and waterskiing. The lake is also stocked with cod, barramundi, saratoga and sooty grunter. On weekends and holidays, boats can be hired and BBQ facilities are provided. Conway NP, 10km SE, offers views across the Whitsunday Islands.

Semi-submersible sub, Reefworld, Hardy Reef

Capt James Cook entered the waters of this group of idyllic islands on Whit Sunday, June 3, 1770. He spent much time charting these beautiful islands comprising 74 tropical islands, only 8 of which are inhabited. The Whitsunday Group lies off the stretch of coast between Mackay and Bowen. Paralleling the island group, further offshore in the Coral Sea, are the coral reefs and lagoons of the Great Barrier Reef a wonderland of marine diversity.
