Roma, 267km west of Dalby, is the commercial centre of the Maranoa District and capital of the Western Downs. Sheep and cattle form the basis of the area's economy.

Main Attractions

The Big Rig is an authentic oil-drilling rig of the 1920s that stands at the eastern entrance to the town. Australia's oil and gas industry began in Roma in 1900, when the first natural gas strike was made at Hospital Hill. Big Rig Research Centre, next door, documents early oil exploration in the area. Romavilla Winery, Queensland's oldest winery, is located on the Northern Rd and visitors are welcome for cellar door tastings and sales. An avenue of 94 bottle trees along Wyndham, Bungil and Station sts stands as a War Memorial. A tree was planted for every soldier from the area who died during WWI.
