DESTINATION: St GeorgeSituated on the eastern bank of the Balonne River, 529km west of Brisbane, St George is in the heart of a cotton growing, grazing and farming district. Main AttractionsThe town, known as the 'fishing capital of Queensland', has many fishing spots, including the Balonne River, which contains Murray cod and yellowbelly. A huge mural in Scott St, painted by artist, Peter Caporn, depicts the history of transport in the area. Scenes include 'Racing the Storms' and 'Crossing the Balonne'. Riversands Vineyard is located in Whytes Rd and is open to the public. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsRosehill Aviaries houses a large variety of birds as well as native animals. As well it holds the country's largest private collection of Australian parrots. It is located 64km west of St George. Beardmore Dam on the Balonne River, 21km north, provides excellent fishing, and picnicking in the surrounding parkland is popular. Koalas in their natural environment can be observed in the town of Bollon, 112km west. A large koala population can be seen in the trees along Wallum Creek. Culgoa Floodplain NP is 227km SW. The park offers 4WD access only and camping is permitted, however, there are no facilities. latest stories
