DESTINATION: StanthorpeThis town is the commercial centre for the Granite Belt, 221km SW of Brisbane, close to the New South Wales border. Fruit growing is the main commercial enterprise and the town is well-known for its apples. Other produce includes stone and citrus fruits. Winemaking is an established and growing industry. There are 4 national parks in the region. Girraween NP, 32km south, has huge granite outcrops and hills great for rockclimbing and which look stunning in springtime carpeted with wildflowers. Sundown NP, 79km SW, is a wilderness area with camping allowed along the Severn River. There is also a picnic area here. Australia's largest exposed granite rock is the centrepiece of Bald Rock NP. Boonoo Bonoo NP, 60km SE over the New South Wales border, features a 210m waterfall that plummets into a rainforest gorge. There are more than 30 wineries in the region, all offering tastings and cellar door sales.
