Toowoomba

Toowoomba, the capital of the Darling Downs region, is 128km west of Brisbane. Also known as the 'Garden City of Queensland', Toowoomba has 150 attractive parks and gardens. The best private gardens are open to the public during the city's famous Carnival of Flowers, a spring festival held in September. Accommodation is diverse and there are many interesting and historic B&Bs.


Main Attractions

There are many art, craft and antique galleries to browse through. Garden shops and nurseries are also plentiful. Cobb & Co Museum offers visitors an introduction to the history of the Darling Downs. Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, located in Ruthven St, exhibits paintings, fine art prints, and works by contemporary local artists. There are many heritage walks to take around the town and brochures are available from the information centre. The Waterbird Habitat, in MacKenzie St, provides 7.6ha of lakes and grassland for many bird species. This is a popular area for walks and picnics. Other parks worth visiting include Queens Park Gardens, located in Lindsay St and Japanese Gardens at the University of Southern Queensland. Picnic Point Park offers magnificent views of the Lockyer Valley.

Dad and Dave's Historic Rudds Pub is located in Nobby, near Toowoomba. The theme behind the pub is based on Steele Rudd's famous collection of stories. Visitors can dine in the heritage lounge, view the collection of historical photographs or listen to the resident storyteller. There are many scenic drives around the region varying in length from 48km to 255km. Brochures are available from the information centre.
