DESTINATION: TownsvilleTownsville is located in the dry tropics, 1384km north of Brisbane around Ross River. Townsville is the region"s centre for government and rural and mining industries; it is the business and commerce capital of the north. Main AttractionsThe Museum of Tropical Queensland, in Flinders St East, is home to the largest display of tropical dinosaur fossils in Australia. The museum also features the Pandora Shipwreck exhibition. In the same street is Reef HQ, a living reef in a huge tank. It"s the largest living coral reef on land. The Imax Dome Theatre, also in this building, offers an 18m-dome screen. Visitors can try their luck at Jupiters Townsville Hotel and Casino, located in Sir Leslie Thiess Dr. Boat cruises to the Great Barrier Reef and launches to Magnetic, Orpheus, Dunk, Hinchinbrook and Bedarra islands leave from Townsville's ferry terminal. The Botanic Gardens are located in Gregory St. The Town Common and Environmental Park is a birdwatchers' paradise. The Palmetum, located near James Cook University campus in Douglas, has a wide variety of palms from around the world. The Strand has a large rockpool and 2.5km landscaped promenade that is well suited to outdoor lifestyle. Children love the Water Park, near the Tobruk Memorial Pool, which is also on the Strand. Spectacular views of Townsville, Magnetic Island and the surrounding area are available from Castle Hill, the landmark granite outcrop in the centre of town; and also from Mount Stuart, around 10km to the SW. |

Nearby attractionsMany tours are possible from Townsville, including tours of the rainforest and Outback, white-water rafting, diving and sailing. The Australian Institute of Marine Science is located 30km east at Cape Ferguson and guided tours can be booked. Billabong Sanctuary, on the Bruce Hwy, has crocodile shows and visitors can also see the koalas being fed. Magnetic Island, in Cleveland Bay, can be seen from any point along the Townsville waterfront and is 20min from the city by fast cat ferry. The island has 23 bays and beaches, with well over half set aside as national park.
