DESTINATION: Tully

Tully is located at the base of Mount Tyson, on Banyan Creek, a tributary of the Tully River. The town is notable for having one of the highest annual rainfalls in Australia. Tully's economic mainstays include sugar, bananas, tropical fruit, cattle, aquaculture and tourism.

Main Attractions

Located in the heart of town, Tully Sugar Mill is open during the crushing season, June-mid-Nov. Daily tours are available and can be booked through the information centre. Tully is the base for one of the best white-water rafting adventures in Australia.

Nearby attractions

An area of natural beauty, Mission Beach is located along the Great Green Way, 25km NE of Tully or a 2hr drive from Cairns and Townsville. Stretching along 14km of coastline, fringed by tropical rainforest and overlooking nearby Dunk and Bedarra islands, the Mission Beach area is worthwhile exploring. The rainforests of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area are nearby and walking track maps are available from the Wet Tropics Visitor Centre. To explore the outer area of the Great Barrier Reef, boats leave daily from nearby Clump Point Jetty. White-water rafting, canoeing and kayaking adventures are popular on the Tully River, as is swimming in the river's upper reaches. Tully Heads, 22km SE, is a good spot for fishing.
