DESTINATION: WintonLocated in the 'red heart of Queensland', around 1400km NW of Brisbane, Winton is one of Australia's best-known Outback towns. It is also known as the home of bush poetry, hosting the annual Bronze Swagman Award; one of the country's most prestigious literary awards. Main AttractionsThe Ted Elliott Mineral and Gemstone and Mining Display is one of Australia's best geological displays. It is located in the Corfield and Fitzmaurice building in Elderslie St. The display features thousands of specimens and works of art. The Dinosaur Diorama is made up of 12 life-size dinosaurs. Also located in the centre is Combo Crafts, where you can purchase original and handcrafted items. The Waltzing Matilda Centre, in Elderslie St, is dedicated to the song Banjo Paterson wrote on Dagworth Station near Winton in 1895. The centre has interactive and interpretive displays. The Waltzing Matilda Bush Poetry Festival is held annually. The historic Royal Theatre, located in Elderslie St, is an open-air picture theatre and museum, and one of the oldest of its kind still operating in Australia. Around town, there are sites commemorating Qantas, the country's flagship airline, which was formed in the town in 1920. |

Nearby attractions
Lark Quarry CP protects fossilised evidence of a dinosaur stampede some 93 million years ago. The park is on the eroded edge of the Tully Range, 110km SW. More than 5 000 dinosaur footprints, captured in rock, can be seen today. Opalton, 115km south, is an historic town where boulder opals are mined in nearby gemfields; there is also a public fossicking area. Bladensburg NP is 15km south and visitors can take a self-drive tour along the Route of the River Gum; there are campgrounds at the Bough Shed Hole.
