Yungaburra

The picturesque town of Yungaburra is 15km east of Atherton, high on the edge of the Atherton Tableland. The town is famous for its National Trust-classified Historic Precinct and award-winning restaurants.

Main Attractions

The best way to explore the town is by following the route in the Heritage Walk leaflet prepared by the National Trust of Queensland and available from the information centre. A highlight of the Heritage Walk is the Lake Eacham Hotel, which has a display of historic photographs depicting the area's early sawmilling days. There are many art and craft galleries to browse through and the town also offers good restaurants. At Peterson Creek, on the Gillies Hwy, there is a platypus-viewing platform. Best times to visit are at sunrise and sunset.

In Crater Lakes NP there are 2 volcanic crater lakes. Lake Barrine, 10km NE, is the largest of the crater lakes with clear blue waters 65m deep and fringed with lush rainforest. There is a 5.14km-circuit track beginning at the lake's edge. Daily flora and fauna cruises on the lake are available. Lake Eacham, 5km east, has a 2.8km track encircling the lake also surrounded by differing pockets of rainforests; the complexity of rainforest com-munities is primarily determined by soil fertility and rainfall. Swimming is popular and there are BBQ and picnic facilities. The famous and much photographed Curtain Fig Tree is located 2.5km SW of town in a small forestry reserve. Lake Tinaroo, 3km north, offers boating, fishing, waterskiing, sailing and swimming. On the eastern shores of Lake Tinaroo, there are The Chimneys, Mobo Creek Crater and Cathedral Fig Tree. Malanda, 20km south of Yungaburra, has its 19th-century Majestic Theatre. The Malanda Falls CP and Scenic Reserve offers a variety of signposted rainforest walks.

Tropical North Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea islands and the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the rainforest mountains that sweep down from the northernmost section of the Great Dividing Range to the west. Inland from the balmy, humid coast, the Atherton Tableland is elevated 600-900m above sea level. Known as the cool tropics, the weather is usually warm and sunny during the day, while nights are cool to cold. more
