DESTINATION: BerriFounded in 1911, the town of Berri owes its existence to irrigation. It is built on the site of what was originally a refuelling stop for traffic on the Murray River in the 1880s. The town is now known as the 'Heart of the Riverland' and has become an important regional centre. The name 'Berri' comes from the Aboriginal word 'ber-beri' meaning 'wide bend in the river'. Main AttractionsBerri has the largest shopping complex in the Riverland, and excellent facilities for a range of sports including golf, tennis, bowling, fishing, canoeing and waterskiing. Visit Earth Works and the Berri Art Gallery for local arts and crafts. For a great view of the town try the Water Tower Lookout on Fiedler St. To cruise the Murray, houseboats are for hire from the large local fleet. Close to the marina there is a memorial sculpture garden to Jimmy James, one of Australia's most famous and respected Aboriginal trackers. |
