Burra

Burra is located 154km north of Adelaide. A treasure, it is listed on the National Estate and is a declared State Heritage Area. The first mining-company town, known as Kooringa, was established by 1851. With a population of more than 5000 people, many of whom lived in small satellite villages based around a different British regional identity. In time, the settlements merged to become Burra. Today tourism and pastoral industries form the town's economic base.

Main Attractions

As there is so much to see in this small town it is worthwhile using the guide Discovering Historic Burra. Walks around the town and through the cemetery are a good introduction to Burra's heritage. The town's museums are well worth visiting, including the Burra Mine Open Air Museum, once a copper mine, it features a powder magazine dating to 1847. Also worth a look are historic sites such as the underground cellars of the old Unicorn Brewery; Redruth Gaol, which was used in the 1979 film, Breaker Morant; the old copper mines; and miners' dugouts; by 1851 almost 2000 miners lived in caverns dug into the banks of the Burra Creek until forced out by floods.
