Clare | South AustraliaClare lies at the northern end of the Clare Valley, renowned as one of South Australia's premium wine-producing regions. Close enough to Adelaide to be accessible to daytrippers, the picturesque valley offers a full range of accommodation. Settled in 1842, the town is named after County Clare in Ireland. Main AttractionsThe many National Trust-classified buildings can be seen on the historic town walk, including Wolta Wolta Homestead (1846) and the Old Police Station Museum in Neagles Rock Rd, which holds memorabilia and early records of the district. There are a number of shady parks perfect for picnics and BBQ's and walking trails at Inchiquin Lake, Clare's main water-storage area. Not too far from the town centre, Billy Goat Hill provides good views of the region. |

As well there are tours of the working Bungaree Sheep Station, which was established in 1841. Most popular of course are the wineries found in the region. The first vines planted were at Sevenhill, 7km south of Clare, by a Jesuit priest from Austria. Now there are more than 30 wineries in the valley, including Tim Adams, Knappstein, Eldredge, Wilson Vineyard, Stringy Brae, Waninga, Mitchell, Crabtree of Watervale, Olssen and Taylors. The Clare Valley Riesling Trail, a pathway suitable for cyclists and walkers, runs 27km from Clare to Auburn and is an ideal way to experience the picturesque countryside.
