Keith | South AustraliaKnown as the 'Gateway to the south-east', the modern rural town of Keith was once part of the arid Ninety Mile Desert. In the1950s the CSIRO carried out experiments that showed the land could be made to be fertile. Modern farming methods then opened up the land to agriculture and now some of the state's leading cattle studs are established in the district. Main AttractionsOne of the most impressive of the early buildings in Heritage St is the former Congregational Church (1910). Built of local stone, it has some original leadlight windows and some new ones portraying pioneering history. The park in Heritage St has a rotunda and playground and is popular with visitors. On the south-east edge of town lies Lions Club Park, with picnic areas and a children's playground. There is an 18-hole golf course 5km east on Emu Flat Rd, where the large licensed clubhouse commands views of the township. |

Native flora and fauna abound in this park, which is ideal for bushwalking and has designated camping areas. Mount Monster CP is a much smaller park 14km south of town. Here, birds and animals share their home with picnickers. Kelvin Prowrie Reserve, 8km to the north, is another good picnic area. latest stories
