DESTINATION: Laura

Located near the southern slopes of the Flinders Ranges, the small township of Laura is situated beside the Rocky River. Author and poet C J Dennis spent his boyhood here when his father owned the long-gone Beetaloo Hotel. Laura is a service town for the surrounding rural area, but cottage crafts and tourism also play an important role in the local economy.

Main Attractions

A walking tour takes you to places of special interest in the town, including the charming little Court House and the old brewery, which is now B&B accommodation. Some of the early buildings have become galleries and antique shops, and Laura boasts a silversmith, shoemaker and potter. Perhaps taste South Australia's famous Golden North Ice Cream, which is made in the town. For picnicking and BBQs, there are facilities beside the Rocky River and lawns alongside the Civic Centre. In April the town hosts a large folk fair.
