DESTINATION: Maitland

Lying in the golden heart of the Yorke Peninsula and serving a prosperous rural community, Maitland is rich in limestone soils, which support lambs, barley, wheat and oats. Governor Fergusson named the town after one of his ancestors, Lady Jean Maitland, the wife of Lord Kilkerran of Scotland.

Main Attractions

Maitland offers a Town Heritage Walk that includes significant sites with plaques outside the buildings explaining their history. In particular, St John's Anglican Church (1876), in Caroline St, is notable for its beautiful stained-glass windows. Maitland Museum is located in a former school (1877) and features displays of the town's German heritage, agricultural machinery, as well as the history of schools on the Yorke Peninsula. A key, available from the council, allows access to Maitland Town Hall, where a spectacular wool-on-canvas mural, depicting the history of the district, takes pride of place.

Nearby attractions

A central location for touring the Yorke Peninsula, the town isn't far from the seaside towns of Port Victoria (west) and Ardrossan (east), as well as the Copper Triangle towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. The coastal town of Balgowan, 15km west, is a good fishing spot.
