DESTINATION: MillicentBuilt on land reclaimed from swamp, Millicent is a busy rural centre in the south-east corner of the state. The drainage scheme begun in 1863 transformed the marsh into arable land that today supports pasture and seed crops. Pine forests maintain a pulp mill, paper mill and sawmill. Main AttractionsThe Resource Centre in town is a modern complex that features a civic centre; performance area; library; and art gallery that presents first-class travelling exhibitions. The Living History Museum is also a popular attraction, with a reputation for being one of the best regional museums in South Australia. Occupying the site and buildings of the old primary school, it features Victoriana, Aboriginal, maritime and natural history displays and the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in South Australia. The Millicent Wildlife Park, on Adelaide Rd, is home to many native animals and birds in a lovely garden setting. |

Nearby attractionsTantanoola Caves CP, 21km SE, its famous for its caves, which are carved out of the limestone cliff face. The park is also renowned for the legend of the 'Tantanoola Tiger'; a visit to the park reveals all. An historic woolshed (1863) is located in the township of Glencoe; a key must be obtained from the general store to see the woolshed. Millicent Swimming Lake, off Rendelsham Rd, is open for swimming Oct-April. Further along the road is the picnic area of Lake McIntyre, home to boardwalks and birdwatching hides. latest stories
