DESTINATION: Murray BridgeThis town was known as Mobilong then Edwards Crossing and finally Murray Bridge when the railway bridge connected both sides of the river in 1924. This rural city is the centre of a major agricultural region. Whilst the first road bridge was being built; completed in 1879; a community grew to support the builders. This community grew rapidly and became an important river port when the railway line linked the paddlesteamer trade with Adelaide in 1885. Main AttractionsA perfect holiday spot, Murray Bridge has facilities for most sports, particularly water-sports. River cruising and houseboating are popular as well as the Go Kart Park and the Bunyip in Sturt Reserve. Captain's Cottage Museum, in Thomas St, has a collection of farm equipment, pioneering artefacts and historical records. Murray Bridge also boasts the smallest cathedral in Australia; St John the Baptist Anglican Cathedral on Mannum Rd. The Art Gallery housed in the Town Hall on Sixth St is worth investigating. |
