Settled in the 1840s, the area is famous for its World Heritage-listed and fossil-filled limestone caves. Primary industries include sheep, beef cattle, grains and vineyards. Naracoorte Caves NP is 12km SE of Naracoorte. The national park was listed in 1994 as a World Heritage site for its extensive fossil deposits. The Wonambi Fossil Centre has life-like moving models of extinct animals, and the Bat Cave Teleview Centre allows visitors to view the inside of a Bat Cave via infrared cameras. The nearby Heathfield Ridge Winery offers guided tours while the wine regions of Coonawarra, Padthaway and Wrattonbully are all close to Naracoorte.
