DESTINATION: Orroroo

Orroroo is a pretty little town lying on the edge of the Southern Flinders Ranges. It is a service centre for the surrounding agricultural region. Proclaimed a town in 1876, the name comes from the Aboriginal word 'oorama'. There is controversy over whether the name means 'meeting place of the magpie' or 'early start'.

Main Attractions

Many beautifully restored 1870s buildings and shopfronts are to be found in Orroroo's wide tree-lined streets including Cellar Antiques (Main St), Yesteryear Costume Gallery (Adelaide Rd) and Solly's Hut, an early settler's cottage built of pug and pine containing furniture and relics from the 1870s (inspection by appointment). Tank Hill Lookout, off Pekina Rd, provides scenic views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Nearby attractions

Around 12km south of town lies the 'almost' ghost town of Black Rock. A signpost here directs drivers to Magnetic Hill, an intriguing natural phenomenon where cars apparently roll uphill when they are stopped on what appears to be a downhill slope. The Pekina Reservoir can be found by walking along the trail from Lions Picnic and BBQ area. Walkers pass ancient Aboriginal carvings, natural springs and a poem that was carved into a rock in 1896. The walk continues past the remains of Pekina Homestead, the district's first permanent settlement.
