DESTINATION: Pinnaroo

Pinnaroo

Pinnaroo is the first South Australian town to be encountered by travellers from New South Wales and Victoria using the Mallee Hwy. This little oasis in the middle of the Mallee owes its 'greenness' to the availability of good underground water that supports an olive plantation, mixed farming and potato growing. Other primary production in the region includes wheat, barley, poultry, sheep, pigs, lambs and beef cattle.

Main Attractions

The town offers excellent sporting facilities, a number of pleasant picnic spots and a small fauna park on the corner of South Tce and Mann St. Mallee Tourist and Heritage Centre brings together 4 museum collections; the Historical Museum; the Heritage Centre with printing machinery and equipment and a farm machinery collection; the Gum Family Collection of stationary engines; and the unusual DA Wurfel Cereal Collection, comprising over 1300 varieties of grain from around the world.

Nearby attractions

Pinnaroo makes a good base for those interested in flora and fauna. There are a number of conservation parks in the area which were set aside to preserve unique local environments. Walks of varying distances can be taken in Ngarkat CP, a wilderness that adjoins Scorpion Springs and Mount Shaugh parks to the south of Pinnaroo, while to the north are Billiatt and the smaller Karte and Peebinga conservation parks.
