DESTINATION: Quorn

Quorn

Located in a valley in the southern Flinders Ranges, the old railway town of Quorn is an important gateway to the ranges and a fascinating destination in its own right. Originally, in the 1850s, the district thrived on wheat production. This gave way to sheep and cattle when the good rains of the early years failed. Quorn was established as a railway town in 1878, today it is in a position to cater to a diverse tourist trade, which ensures its existence and prosperity.

Main Attractions

Many pre-1900 buildings remain in the town and can be viewed on the town's 45min Historic Buildings Walk. The Quorn Mill (1878) now operates as a motel and restaurant. Several other local outlets sell arts and crafts. A collection of farm machinery is located in Lions Park on the Port Augusta Rd. From April to November the Pichi Richi Railway offers a link to the past with a steam-train trip on a section of narrow-gauge line from Quorn Station to Woolshed Flat, Stirling North and Port Augusta.

Nearby attractions

Quorn is an ideal base for exploring the historic ruins of Kanyaka, Willochra, Gordon, Wilson and Simmonston; all reminders of the harsh conditions encountered by early pioneers. Spectacular mountain scenery can be seen in Yarrah Vale and Warren gorges and from Buckaringa Scenic Lookout. Both Dutchmans Stern CP, 8km west, and Mount Brown CP, 16km away are worth a visit.
