DESTINATION: Robe

Robe

Previously, one of the most important ports in the state, Robe was settled in 1846 and is now a holiday destination and the home port of a commercial crayfishing fleet. The town is located on Guichen Bay, 336km south of Adelaide, and was named after Governor Fredrick Robe, who sailed along the coast and chose this site as a suitable location for a port.

Main Attractions

The Historic Walk takes in the charm and character of the town as it passes the old cottages and historic buildings of the old port area. In particular, the Star of Sea Catholic Church (1868), and a number of the early homes now offer accommodation or house galleries and specialty shops. Built in 1863, Robe Customs House in Royal Circus is a National Trust museum displaying nautical items and local memorabilia. The Historical Interpretive Centre is worth a visit and is part of the library and tourist information complex in Mundy Tce. Fresh, locally caught crayfish and fish are popular with residents and visitors to the port.

Nearby attractions

This is a wonderful area for fishing, surfing and swimming holidays, Robe has a very safe beach only 2km north of town. Long Beach, on Guichen Bay, stretches for 11km and at the northern end it is possible to drive onto the white sand beach. It is not safe to swim in the ocean beaches as many of them have dangerous rips. For an interesting walk take the Obelisk Rd to Cape Dombey, where a clifftop track leads to the ruins of an old gaol and the Obelisk, once a beacon for early mariners. Robe borders Little Dip CP. Around 14km SE of Robe, Narraburra Woolshed has displays of shearing and wool sorting. Group bookings are required. For wine lovers, the Limestone Coast region offers Mount Benson and Cape Jaffa wineries.
