DESTINATION: StrathalbynThe north-east gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula, Strathalbyn lies on the banks of the Angas River and is acknowledged as one of South Australia's most attractive rural towns. When they settled in the district in 1839, the Scottish Rankine brothers commenced building St Andrew's Uniting Church, overlooking the river. Main AttractionsThe wide streets, numerous historic buildings and the stately old homes contribute to Strathalbyn's status as a Heritage Town. A browsers' and shoppers' paradise, the main areas in town are Albyn Tce/Dawson St and High St, which are lined with shops selling antiques, arts and crafts and all manner of collectables. The old Police Station and Court House are now home to the National Trust Museum, which displays photographs, clothing and appliances that depict the life of the pioneers. The pleasant walk through the Soldier's Memorial Gardens and along the river bank is highly recommended. |
