DESTINATION: Streaky BayStreaky Bay is a picturesque town servicing thriving rural and fishing communities and also the granite-mining industry. Around 727km NW of Adelaide, the town attracts a growing number of visitors to the local bays, beaches and coves. The town was originally named Flinders, after Capt Matthew Flinders. In 1940, it changed to that of the bay, which Flinders named in 1802 because of its streaky colours; it is now known the colours are created from oils given off by seaweed. Main AttractionsThe oldest building, Hospital Cottage (1864), is made of mud brick and St Canute's Catholic Church is a lovely old sandstone building. The Old School Museum in Montgomerie Tce displays the area's pioneering memorabilia as well as botanical and geological exhibits. The Powerhouse Restored Engine Centre, Alfred Tce, has displays of working engines. A replica of the world's largest great white shark caught on rod-and-reel is on display at Stewart's Shell Roadhouse Tourist Centre. |
