DESTINATION: Tailem BendPerched on a cliff overlooking the Murray River, Tailem Bend was proclaimed in 1887 and became a major railway town with lines servicing the Murray-Mallee area. With the reduction of railway passenger and freight services, Tailem Bend gained a new lease of life providing facilities for the steady stream of road traffic to and from the south-east and eastern states. Main AttractionsThere is a shopping centre in Railway Tce, opposite the station, and alongside the station, a large park features a stationary engine and adventure playground for children. A picnic spot with river views is located near the ferry landing and there are 2 antique shops for browsers. |

Many hours can be spent wandering the streets of Old Tailem Town Historical Village, 5km NW of town. This village, on a former sheep run, has been 'created' by importing old buildings and restoring them, and erecting new 'old' buildings. The 12 streets in the village contain a school, church, railway station, general store and police station, also a barber, watchmaker and saddler. The Murray River is an excellent location for boating, sailing, rowing, swimming and fishing and 3km downstream, Freds Landing has a concrete boat ramp. The Riverside Walking Trail leads past a cliff face where it is possible to see fossils and evidence of early Aboriginal habitation.
