DESTINATION: Victor Harbor

Victor Harbor

Only an hour's drive from Adelaide, Victor Harbor is one of the state's major tourist destinations. On the Fleurieu Peninsula, it nestles in a sandy curve of Encounter Bay. Because of its accessibility, the population swells on weekends and can increase up to 80 000 during the peak holiday season.

Main Attractions

The area enjoys a mild Mediterranean-type climate and extensive coastline, so recreational activities can be enjoyed most of the year. On Sunday, Monday, public holidays, and school holidays, the historic Cockle Train runs between Goolwa and Victor Harbor. Rolling past beaches and sand hills on Australia's oldest public railway is a nostalgia trip for history lovers. There are many historic buildings in Victor Harbor; take a look at Congregational Church (1869), the Adare House (1852), St Augustines Church (1869) and Old Customs House (1867). The South Australian Whale Centre on Railway Tce has displays to increase awareness about dolphin and whale conservation. Three favourite attractions with kids are within a 5min drive of Victor Harbor; they are Greenhills Adventure Park, offering canoeing and waterslides; Urimbirra Wildlife Park, which has birds, mammals and reptiles; and Wild Rose Miniature Village featuring scale models of buildings set in lovely gardens.

Nearby attractions

Conservation parks and nature reserves abound around Victor Harbor. The Heysen Trail, South Australia's premier walk, passes through Deep Creek CP. The neighbouring towns of Port Elliot, Middleton and Goolwa are within easy reach of Victor Harbor as are the wineries of McLaren Vale, the beaches of Gulf St Vincent, Cape Jervis and the pretty town of Strathalbyn. Access to Granite Island is via a causeway built in 1875. Every afternoon at dusk, the Penguin Interpretive Centre runs guided tours to view the hundreds of little penguins that have made the island their home. Take a look at the Aquarium off Granite Island, which has an underwater viewing area.
