DESTINATION: Waikerie

Waikerie is known as the 'Citrus Centre of Australia', with more than 5000ha of irrigated vineyards, citrus and stone-fruit orchards on the banks of the Murray River. About 170km NE of Adelaide, the town has been turned from mallee scrubland into productive farming land. It is thought the name 'Waikerie' is a corruption of the Aboriginal word 'weikari' which refers to the giant swift moths found in the area.

The Waikerie Golf Club is among the top 10 South Australian golf clubs. Starting near the ferry, a scenic 2km Clifftop Walkway runs along sandstone cliffs edging the river. On the way, take in the spectacular views from Waikerie Lookout Tower. The walkway runs from the lookout to Lions Riverfront Reserve, which provides lawns by the water's edge, shady trees, picnic and BBQ facilities and a playground. Gliding is also a popular activity as the conditions in the area around Waikerie are ideal.

Nearby attractions

There are 3 protected wetland areas near the town; Stockyard Plains, Hart Lagoon and Maize Island CP; all with an abundance of birdlife, fauna and flora. Broken Cliffs offer a fossicking spot around 7km north on the river. Crystallised gypsum fossils can be found in great numbers here. A short drive away is the popular Lock 2, used to control water levels in the Murray. It has BBQ and picnic facilities in a lovely setting.
