Woomera | South AustraliaLocated 502km NW of Adelaide, the interdependent Long Range Weapons Establishment and Woomera village were established in 1947. They were the result of a joint project between Britain and Australia to set up a remote rocket range. Although much reduced in size, the range itself is a prohibited area, even for the traditional Aboriginal owners. Main AttractionsA particular point of interest in the town is the Missile Park where rockets, aircraft and weapons associated with the testing range are displayed. The town's facilities include a hotel, caravan park and camping areas. There is a modern shopping centre, cinema, fitness centre, sports facilities and the Heritage Centre, which features the Woomera Heritage Museum, snack bar and bowling alley. At Old Guard Gate there are opal sales and Breen Park is a perfect picnic area. |
