DESTINATION: Campbell Town

Campbell Town

Campbell Town is 66km SE of Launceston on the Midland Hwy. It was established as an early garrison town on the route between Hobart and Launceston, but its inhabitants were nevertheless harassed by 3 notorious bushrangers, Matthew Brady, Martin Cash and John Quigley. In 1820 Saxon merinos were introduced to the area, and the town is still a centre renowned for its fine wool and stud sheep, as well as beef cattle and timber.

Main Attractions

There are many National Trust-classified buildings and sites that can be seen on a self-guided heritage walk, including Campbell Town Inn (1840) and convict-built Red Bridge (1837). In High St, there is a memorial to Harold Gatty, the first round-the-world flight navigator, and the Heritage Highway Museum showcases colonial history.
