DESTINATION: DevonportThe third largest city in Tasmania is a busy port for agricultural and industrial exports. As it has an airport and terminal for the Spirit of Tasmania from Melbourne, Devonport is the point of entry for many of the state's visitors. Main AttractionsBluff Lighthouse (1889) stands on the dramatic Mersey Bluff beaming its light 27km out to sea. Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture and Museum Centre was established to preserve a superb collection of Aboriginal rock carvings. There are also a number of displays and over 2000 artefacts. Paintings by Tasmanian artists are exhibited at the Gallery and Arts Centre in Stewart St. The Maritime and Folk Museum off Victoria Pde illustrates shipping history with model ships, photographs and souvenirs. The house museum Home Hill (1916), administered by the National Trust, was the home of former Premier of Tasmania (1923-1928) and later Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons and Dame Enid Lyons. Don River Railway and Museum runs vintage and steam train trips 7 days a week and has a large collection of railway memorabilia. A 7km walking and cycling track links the city with Mersey Bluff and the Don River Railway and Museum. |
