DESTINATION: Eaglehawk Neck

Eaglehawk Neck

This small town sits on the very narrow isthmus that separates Tasman and Forestier peninsulas. In convict times it was blockaded by police, soldiers and a line of chained savage dogs to prevent escape from the Port Arthur penal settlement. It is now known as a fishing spot, with a tuna-fishing fleet operating from Pirates Bay.

Main Attractions

A museum in the restored Officers Quarters, off Arthur Hwy, tells the story of Port Arthur escapee, bushranger Martin Cash. A bronze sculpture marks the site of the infamous dogline.

Nearby attractions

Sailing is popular in Pirates Bay. Many of the attractions of the 2 peninsulas are close by. The Tessellated Pavement, 1km north, looks man-made, yet it results from the earth's movement and wave erosion. Pirates Bay Lookout is just a little further north. Some of the most striking formations of Tasman NP are about 4km to the south: Tasman Blowhole, Tasman Arch and Devil's Kitchen. The Tasmanian Devil Park and Wildlife Rescue Centre is 12km SW on the road to Port Arthur. To the south, there is a coastal walking track in Tasman NP from Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay. Port Arthur Historic Site is 21km SW.
