DESTINATION: LatrobeThis historic township dates from 1851 and its 19th-century streetscapes give it plenty of character. Located a 15min drive from Bass Strait Searoad Terminal and Devonport Airport, it is an ideal base for discovering the attractions of northern Tasmania. Main AttractionsOld buildings, many National Trust-classified, have been rejuvenated as restaurants, boutiques and antique galleries. Local history is conserved at the Court House Museum with prints and artefacts on display. Bells Parade Park is a delightful riverside picnic spot on the Mersey River. The shingle-roofed pioneer house, Sherwood Hall, can be inspected here. The Australian Axemans Hall of Fame, celebrating Tasmanian woodchopping achievements, is nearby. Teddy Sheean Memorial Walk is accessed from Gilbert St and guided platypus-viewing tours are available at dawn and dusk. One of Australia's most important cycling carnivals is held at Latrobe every Christmas. |
