New Norfolk

This historic town, 33km NW of Hobart on the Derwent River, was pioneered around 1808 by Norfolk Island free settlers. The district produces most of the hops used by Australian breweries, although the main industry in the region is paper manufacture.


Main Attractions

New Norfolk has many fine examples of colonial architecture, including Bush Inn (1815), Old Colony Inn (1835), now a museum, and St Matthew's Church (1823), reputedly the state's oldest church. These can be seen on a heritage walk that also includes Denmark Hill (1830) and Rosedown Gardens (1840), which feature over a 1000 roses. The Oast House is the only hops' museum in Australia. Jet boats leave daily for the Derwent River rapids and Derwent Valley Railway has several excursions every month. There are scenic lookouts at Peppermint Hill and Pulpit Rock, and BBQ facilities in Esplanade and Tynwald parks. Browsers will enjoy the Drill Hall Markets in Stephen St, Tues-Sat.

Nearby attractions

Group tours of the newsprint mills at Boyer, 5km east, can be arranged in advance. Salmon Ponds, 11km NW, at Plenty, is where rainbow and brown trout were first bred in Australia. The complex includes a restaurant and Museum of Trout Fishing. Mount Field NP, 40km NW, features spectacular mountain scenery and the much-photographed Russell Falls, surrounded by giant swamp gums.
