DESTINATION: Sheffield
Sheffield is a mixed farming community 30km south of Devonport, and lies in the foothills of Mount Roland, (1234m), in an area of lovely natural scenery. The town's most famous feature is the series of more than 50 murals; mainly illustrating the town's early history; painted on almost every available wall. There is a self-guided audio tour "Story of the Sheffield Murals" which describes the story of how a typical Tasmanian town facing rural decline succeeded in becoming a wonderful outdoor art gallery. Main Attractions
From its foray into mural, Sheffield has developed into a hub for fine arts and crafts people. There are studio-galleries where local work can be seen and bought, including woodcraft, glass and ceramics. Pioneering memorabilia is housed in the Kentish Museum. Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society operates steam train trips from Apex Park on the first weekend of the month and daily in the summer school holidays. |
