Swansea | Tasmania
Formerly one of many whaling stations on Tasmania's East Coast, Swansea is a popular fishing and tourist resort overlooking beautiful Great Oyster Bay. It is a handy base for exploring Freycinet and Maria Island NPs. Main AttractionsA heritage walk reveals several old buildings that are still used for their original purpose, including the Council Chambers (1860), Morris' General Store (1838) and the Swan Inn (1841). Swansea Bark Mill (1885) processed black wattle bark for leather tannins until 1935, it is now a centre for; Yesteryear Museum charts local history; a Bakery/Cafe, Tavern, Bistro and Bottle shop. The museum at the Community Centre (circa 1860) includes the immense slate billiard table made for the 1880 World Exhibition. The walking track around Waterloo Point takes in Aboriginal middens, views to Freycinet Peninsula and muttonbird viewing at dusk. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsThere is a small colony of little penguins at Coswell Beach, 1km south. Kate's Berry Farm, 2km south has fresh berries in season and fruit wines. There are a number of vineyards in the region for wine tasting and cellar door sales. Duncombes Lookout, 3km south, offers splendid views. Spikey Beach, 7km south, has picnic grounds, rock fishing and the convict-built Spikey Bridge (1843). Mayfield Beach, 14km south, has safe swimming and a walking track to Three Arch Bridge. Dolphin Sands and the Swan River picnic area, 4km north, are popular recreation spots. Meetus Falls and Lost Falls are 50km NW. latest stories
