DESTINATION: Swansea

Swansea

Formerly one of many whaling stations on Tasmania's East Coast, Swansea is a popular fishing and tourist resort overlooking beautiful Great Oyster Bay. It is a handy base for exploring Freycinet and Maria Island NPs.

Main Attractions

A heritage walk reveals several old buildings that are still used for their original purpose, including the Council Chambers (1860), Morris' General Store (1838) and the Swan Inn (1841). There are 3 attractions at the information centre on the Tasman Hwy: Swansea Bark Mill (1885) processed black wattle bark for leather tannins until 1935, it is now a centre for Tasmanian crafts; Yesteryear Museum charts local history; and the Wine and Wool Centre is an outlet for Tasmanian wines. The museum at the Community Centre (circa 1860) includes the immense slate billiard table made for the 1880 World Exhibition. The walking track around Waterloo Point takes in Aboriginal middens, views to Freycinet Peninsula and muttonbird viewing at dusk.
